Siruthuli, with support from Indo-Tech Transformers, has launched a comprehensive initiative to treat sewage and restore the Sundapalayam stream in Coimbatore district.
The project focuses on reviving a 1.5 km stretch of the stream through cleaning and desilting, along with the construction of three check dams to improve water retention, groundwater recharge and percolation. Wastewater treatment measures will include dosing of treatment solutions, constructed wetlands and vetiver plantations along the stream bunds. According to Siruthuli, “This integrated approach is expected to improve groundwater quality within six months and lead to the complete restoration of the stream.” Sundapalayam Periapallam originates in the Marudhamalai hills and drains into the Noyyal river, supporting farming communities that cultivate coconut, areca nut and banana. Rapid urbanisation has led to untreated sewage entering the stream daily, degrading water quality.
Siruthuli has been studying sewage inflows and treatment options, with early vetiver planting showing positive results. The project was formally launched on 31 December, 2025 in the presence of Janakiraman Sarvesvaran, Consul General of India in Sydney.
