The first Software Technology Park
(STP) in northeast India was inaugurated in Guwahati in Assam, by Assam chief
minister Mr.Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, on 13 August 2000. The park, the
seventeenth in India, was jointly set up
by Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and the Assam state
government at a cost of Rs.5 crore. The park would aim at attracting investment
in the information technology (IT) industry and increase business collaboration
in the north-eastern states of India. The STP has an area of 20,000 square feet
of built-up area, which could be used by small and medium entrepreneurs in the
IT industry.
An international gateway Intelsat business station has
also been commissioned for providing high speed data communication facilities to
the entrepreneurs in Guwahati.
