The Union government has approved a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the Musi Riverfront Development Project, with ADB set to disburse Rs 4,100 crore in the first phase.
This marks a significant step towards rejuvenating and developing the Musi river in Hyderabad. A consortium of firms including Meinhardt, Cushman & Wakefield, RIOS, ZHA, and SOM will submit detailed project reports (DPRs) within two weeks. The project includes constructing iconic landmarks such as the Gateway of Hyderabad at Kothwalguda and Gandhi Sarovar at Bapu Ghat, featuring the world’s tallest Mahatma Gandhi statue and a museum dedicated to Gandhian philosophy.
The state has requested 250 acres of land from the Defence Ministry, with 100 acres approved so far. The development will clean the riverbed and add walking tracks, shopping malls, amphitheatres, entertainment parks, and night-time economy initiatives. The catchment area will also feature statues of Telangana and national figures, transforming it into a vibrant cultural and recreational hub.
