With financial backing from the Central government, Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) is set to establish four new substations under Phase 3 of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) project.
A 400 kV substation will be built at Saliyamangalam in Thanjavur, while Chidambaram, Thakkalai, and Papanasam will each receive a 230 kV substation. A senior official said, “The purpose of this project is to strengthen the transmission network so that renewable energy from wind, solar and hydro plants can be evacuated smoothly to the main load centres across the state.”
The state aims to generate an additional 100 billion units of green energy, requiring more transmission lines and substations, especially to transfer wind power from western and southern districts to northern and delta regions. Officials highlighted challenges like land acquisition and stressed that renewable power for agriculture would reduce financial pressure on the discom and ensure steady supply during peak irrigation periods.
