Tamil Nadu has government has announced a significant step toward becoming a global shipbuilding hub with two ultra-mega projects worth Rs 30,000 crore.
The investments, formalised through MoUs at the Transforming Maritime Sector event in Thoothukudi, are expected to generate employemnt for more than 55,000 persons. According to NDTV, Cochin Shipyard will invest Rs 15,000 crore to establish a world-class commercial shipyard, creating 10,000 work opportunities in the first phase, including 4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect roles.
Similarly, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders will set up another shipyard with an equal investment, generating employemnt of over 45,000, including 5,000 directly and 40,000 indirectly. These initiatives align with Tamil Nadu’s Maritime Transport Manufacturing Policy 2025 and the recent SIPCOT-V.O.C. Port MoU to form a special purpose vehicle for shipbuilding.
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa emphasized the collaborative effort between the state and Union Government in securing these projects, highlighting their role in advancing India’s maritime infrastructure, technology, and sustainability while boosting Tamil Nadu’s economic growth.
