Pune-based SOPAN Group, in partnership with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), has commenced work on India’s first green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility at VOC Port, Tamil Nadu.
The project was inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, marking a milestone in sustainable maritime infrastructure. The pilot-scale project involves construction of a 750 m³ Green Methanol Storage and Bunkering Terminal, along with refuelling systems. SOPAN Group, acting as the EPC contractor, is executing the project as part of the Government of India’s Maritime India Vision 2030.
VOCPA Chairperson Shri Susanta Purohit noted, “The Govt of India has set a vision for India to achieve NetZero, and with this vision VOCPA is advancing its Green Port mission.” Aniruddha Kadvekar, Director, SOPAN, emphasized the project’s impact in enabling up to 95 percent reduction in CO2 emissions for ships, making India a global player in green shipping and a preferred sustainable hub.
