Tamil Nadu government will develop a new city near Chennai, spanning 2,000 acres, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced on 14 March 2025.
“Tamil Nadu is experiencing one of the highest rates of urbanisation, along with the challenges that come with it. Urban planning experts suggest that rather than expanding cities in a sporadic manner, developing new integrated cities would be a more effective approach to meet public needs,” the Minister said, while presenting the Budget for 2025.
The city will house IT parks, fin-tech trade zones, research and development centres, hi-tech companies, banking and insurance firms, shopping complexes, trade centres, and conference halls. Both public and private sectors will contribute to educational and healthcare facilities.
Residential infrastructure will include multi-storeyed buildings for various income groups, along with an extensive road network, IT and green energy systems, co-working spaces, and recreational areas such as urban squares and parks. To ensure seamless connectivity with Chennai, the plan includes express bus services, metro rail extensions, and proper road networks. The first phase of the ‘Global City’ project, promising world-class facilities, will soon be initiated by TIDCO.
