The Telangana government has revived the Pranahitha-Chevella irrigation project with plans to construct a barrage at Thummidihatti village, near the Maharashtra border, aiming to irrigate lakhs of acres in the erstwhile Adilabad district.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy have reaffirmed their commitment to the long-pending project. Preparatory work has commenced, including the creation of documentation and testing required for construction. Irrigation Advisor Adityanath Das has been assigned to oversee the initiative. The government is consulting original contractors to assess their interest in completing the project under revised rates.
The full reservoir level (FRL) for the Thummidihatti barrage is expected to be maintained at 148 mtrs., a figure agreed upon with Maharashtra in 2015 and 2016. A detailed project report (DPR) had already been submitted to the Central Water Commission, which now may require updates due to cost revisions. Originally estimated at Rs 17,875 crore, the project's cost later increased to Rs 36,257 crore.
As of 2016, Rs 11,678 crore had already been spent before it was repurposed into the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.
