Navi Mumbai International Airport has commenced work on its Terminal-1 and runway, following the handover of the entire 1,160 ha of land required for the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The project is expected to be completed by 2024. A major hurdle in the form of 200-plus structures on the land was cleared this past week, paving the way for works on the international airport. While the river diversion is completed, the hill cutting work will take a couple of months.
The airport plan has been amended and presented to both Central and state governments and the commercial operation date (COD) has been set at 31 December 2024.
A 9.5km perimeter wall will be built soon to prevent the core airport area from encroachment. The airport will have roads from three sides as one side faces the villages.
Moreover, the approach roads to the airport site have been completed, which enabled the contractors to kick off work on the terminal and the runway. Runway filling work is being done simultaneously along with remaining work of hill cutting.
Once the approvals are received from competent authorities, the construction of buildings will start by October 2022. As many as 54 buildings will come up, for which approvals are being sought from 56 different departments.
