Tiruchirappalli International Airport has proposed a major runway expansion, aiming to extend its current runway from 8,000 ft. to 12,500 ft.
The Rs 350 crore project has been submitted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for planning approval. The expansion is expected to allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft and support long-haul international flights. Airport Director SS Raju highlighted that groundwork for the expansion is already in progress, including the construction of a compound wall on newly acquired land. Additionally, several infrastructure upgrades are underway, such as a new Air Traffic Control tower and technical block, costing Rs 55 crore, which is set to be completed by the end of the year.
The airport has also added five new passenger boarding bridges at a cost of Rs 14.8 crore, bringing the total to 10. Furthermore, the airport plans to install an additional one-megawatt solar power plant to increase its sustainability efforts.
