On 21 October 2013, Uddhav Thackeray, president of the Shiv Sena political party, inaugurated the new trauma care hospital at Jogeshwari in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The 14-storeyed hospital, with 304-bed facility was developed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The project cost Rs 125 crore and has seven neonatal intensive care units, 15 gynaecology beds and 30 orthopaedic beds for patients. The hospital is expected to be fully functional in two months time. The project will use solar panels to help reduce electricity consumption. A total of 160 solar panels will heat 20,000 ltr of water daily.
The hospital has been named after the late Shiv Sena chief, Bal Thackeray, and is called Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital.
The project will be included in the Sion group of hospitals, which means the dean of the two hospitals will be the same and there will be an exchange of doctors.
Meanwhile, the BMC is also planning to develop a similar trauma care centre in the eastern suburbs in Bhandup, but that project is expected to take another four years before completion.
