On 21 November, 2023, the Government of Uttar Pradesh approved the proposal to set up a 1,600 MW in Anpara. The project, proposed as Anpara E, will be set up by Meja Utpadan Nigam (MUNPL), a joint venture of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL) and NTPC.
The project, amounting to cost Rs 18,624 crore, received a nod from the Board of UPRVUNL before submitting the proposal to the state government for formal approval. UPRVUNL owns Anpara-A, Anpara-B, and Anpara-D units, having a combined capacity of 2,630 MW. The Anpara-C, a 1,200 MW project, is owned by Lanco.
UPRVUNL has completed the ongoing coal firing trials in the first units of the new thermal projects: Obra C (2x660 MW) and Jawaharpur (2x660 MW). Instructions have been given to begin regular power generation from these units soon. On 18 November, 2023, the Corporation completed the boiler light-up trial of the 660 Mw Panki thermal project in Kanpur.
The Corporation directed the officials to ensure that the ongoing and upcoming overhauling of units at Anpara, Parichha and Obra thermal projects are to be completed by January 2024. Also, it has underlined the need to purchase critical/insurance spares to protect the corporation's units from being shut down in the long run.
UPRVUNL has instructed to take necessary action to utilise the ash emitted by thermal power plants, as per the rules of the Environment Ministry.
