The Uttar Pradesh government is considering a Water Metro service in Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj as part of its smart urban mobility initiatives aimed at promoting tourism and reducing road congestion.
A detailed feasibility study will be conducted first to assess the project’s technical and financial viability. Inspired by Kerala’s Kochi Water Metro—India’s first electric batterypowered boat transport system, the proposed service may operate both intra-city and inter-city, improving connectivity along the Ganga, Saryu, and Yamuna rivers. The initiative is expected to offer an eco-friendly, efficient, and scenic mode of travel, cutting air pollution and easing traffic.
Kochi Metro Rail, which implemented Kerala’s Water Metro, is likely to consult for the project. Chief Secretary SP Goyal is set to meet KMRL officials to discuss feasibility. This move aligns with the state’s vision to develop sustainable river-based transport and tourism, turning these rivers into modern, clean transport channels while preserving their cultural significance.
