The Uttar Pradesh government plans to develop four new ‘smart cities’ between Lucknow and Agra. On 21 November 2014, the Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, is likely to announce it during the foundation ceremony of the expressway project between Agra and Lucknow.
The ‘smart’ township project will be spread across 1,500 ha of land, with a mix of residential, commercial and industrial spaces. This project will come up along the 302 km access controlled expressway on a private partnership model. The Ganga Expressway Industrial Authority will be given the responsibility to develop these townships between Lucknow and Kanpur, and Kanpur and Kannauj, near Firozabad and Agra.
Along the expressway, major development has been planned. With the Rs 15,000 crore expressway between Agra and Lucknow, it will boost the economy of the western and central parts of the state. The new greenfield six-lane road will pass through Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Kannauj, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao and Hardoi. The chief minister plans to extend the expressway by over 700 km beyond Lucknow to cover eastern parts of the state.
