The Vadapalani bus terminus in Chennai, one of the city's busiest transit nodes, is poised for a transformative redevelopment. Chennai Metro Asset Management (CMAML), a joint venture between Chennai Metro Rail and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, has floated tenders for the project.
The 6.65-acre site will be redeveloped into a multimodal transport hub integrated with a commercial complex, at an estimated cost exceeding Rs 480 crore. Situated on the bustling Arcot Road corridor, the existing depot currently manages over 158 buses and 1,100 daily services. The new design features a ground-level transit hub with five boarding bays and two alighting bays, optimising passenger flow and operational efficiency.
The project will offer dual access points—from Arcot Road for terminal users and from Kumaran Colony Main Road for commercial vehicles—ensuring smoother segregation of transit and business traffic.
Rising above the terminal will be a 12-storey commercial tower, housing retail outlets, a food court, restaurants, and office spaces, transforming the site into a vibrant urban node. The redevelopment aims to modernise public transport infrastructure while boosting economic activity in the area.
