The second phase of the Vizhinjam International Port expansion is set to begin in the second week of January 2026, according to Ports Minister V N Vasavan.
The expansion, backed by a Rs 10,000-crore investment from Adani Ports, will significantly enhance the port’s infrastructure. The 800-mtrs. berth will be extended by 1,200 mtrs., creating a 2,000-mtrs. berth for simultaneous unloading of ultra-large vessels. Additionally, the 2.96-km breakwater will be extended by 920 mtrs., bringing its total length to over 3.9 km. “The phases II-IV must be completed by 2028, advancing the timeline from the original 2045 deadline,” said Minister Vasavan.
In other developments, a temporary approach road is ready for inauguration, and the port has received Inland Container Port/Depot (ICP) status. Railway connectivity and land acquisition for cruise ship facilities are also progressing.
