Welspun Steel is planning to set up a crude steel unit at Versamedi village in Kachchh district of Gujarat.
The proposed crude steel unit will have a capacity of three million tpa which will come up over 231.58 ha of land parcel.
The mega project will require an investment worth Rs 14,700 crore. The project will include blast furnace of 3.34 million tpa, steel melt shop of 3.1 million tpa, sinter plant of 5.28 million tpa, rolling mill of 1.37 million tpa of rebar and wire rods, cement grinding unit of 1.5 million tpa, among others.
The unit will also have a power plant (gas based) of 165 and 35 MW. In 2015, standard terms of reference (ToR) was granted for preparing environment impact assessment report and environment management plan of the project.
Moreover, in February 2017, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) accorded environment clearance for the project. The design and survey work was underway in December 2017.
However, the mega project was kept on hold from November 2018, and as per the latest update available with Projects Today, it is still kept on hold due to management decisions.
