Welspun Energy, a part of the Welspun Group, has evinced interest in bidding for the government's programme of setting up 4,000 MW solar ultra mega power projects (UMMPs) in the country.
As per the government's programme, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has identified Rajasthan, Gujarat, Ladakh, and Kargil for setting up proposed solar plants.
The ministry has already started the groundwork on the first UMPP in Rajasthan, and tenders for the Phase-I of the project for developing of 1,000 MW are likely to be floated soon. A JV of six Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) has been formed to execute the project on EPC basis.
For the remaining 3,000 MW, the government plans to invite bids for developing projects of 500 MW each where, the developers will have to construct and maintain the units.
Besides, Welspun has set a target of developing 1,000 MW of solar power and 750 MW of wind power. The company has received approval from the board of directors to raise Rs 15,000 crore to finance its capex plan.
