The West Bengal Cabinet has approved the establishment of two 800 MW supercritical power plants in Salboni, Jhargram, with an investment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
State Power Minister Aroop Biswas announced the decision, noting that JSW Group is already constructing two similar units in Salboni. Additionally, work on the 660 MW Sagardighi supercritical plant is underway to meet the state’s growing industrial and consumer power demand. The move aims to prevent future power crises, a significant shift from the loadshedding issues faced earlier.
At the inauguration of a 1600 MW Salboni plant, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted Bengal’s transformation into a 24x7 power-supplied state. Since 2011, the state has invested Rs 76,000 crore in generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure, with another Rs 48,000 crore planned. Infrastructure achievements include 3.5 lakh km of power lines and 750 substations, with Rs 3,700 crore spent in West Midnapore alone.
