The West Bengal Government, on 1 November 2011, received a revised proposal for development of Nayachar Island, off Haldia, in East Midnapore district of West Bengal, as an industrial hub.
The proposal has been submitted by NRI businessman Prasoon Mukherjee, promoter of Universal Success Enterprises (USE). The proposal envisages a 2,000 MW thermal power plant, an industrial park and an eco-tourism project, involving a total investment of Rs 26,000 crore, on Nayachar Island. While the power plant may require an investment of Rs 12,000 crore, the industrial park and eco-tourism project will require Rs 12,000 crore and Rs 2,000 crore, respectively. Around 50 per cent of coal required for the power plant will be imported from Indonesia, while the balance will be sourced domestically.
