NPCIL on 18 July 2011 began construction of its nuclear power plant with the first pourof concrete for the 700 MWe indigenous pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR)at Rawatbhata in Kota district of Rajasthan.
The reactor will be the seventh nuclear plant at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS),which already has an installed capacity of 1,180 MWe from six units. The excavation work for the Unit 7 at RAPS started in August 2010. The plant is likely to begin commercial operations by June 2016.
