Work orders to
build two flyovers in Kolkata are likely to be issued in the last week of March
2002. The projects are being funded with Japanese assistance.
Kolkata-based
engineering construction company Senbo Engineering and global construction
company Skanska, will be implementing the two projects, the total cost of which
is estimated at Rs.70 crore.
Senbo has bagged
three of the four flyover projects being built in Kolkata at a total cost of
Rs.360 crore. Of these, the Gariahat flyover, implemented entirely by Senbo, is
scheduled for commissioning by 31 March 2002. For the remaining two projects,
Senbo has entered into a joint venture with Skanska. Senbo is the lead partner
in the joint venture with a 70 per cent stake.
Senbo will
construct the Park Street flyover, while Skanska will execute the Lockgate
flyover in north Kolkata. The 654 metre long Park Street flyover is estimated
to cost Rs.54 crore and is scheduled for completion in 29 months. The Lockgate
flyover would be a concrete-built structure, stretching several kilometres,
crossing two railway yards and a major canal. Senbo is confident that the
project will be completed on schedule.
Among its other
projects, Senbo has already started work on the Kolkata Metro project. The
company is erecting elevated rail tracks over Tolly's Canal. Senbo is also
setting up a new truck terminal at Budge Budge, a jetty complex south of the
city. This is scheduled to be completed within three months. The company also
hopes to bag key contracts of the Delhi Metro Rail project.
