The
Union Cabinet, on 14 March 2005, approved the renaming of the upcoming
greenfield international airport at Hyderabad to "Rajiv Gandhi
International Airport".
On
15 December 2004, the Cabinet had approved the concession agreement for the
airport, which is 20 km from the existing airport at Begumpet.
The
airport, expected to cost Rs.1,394 crore (Phase I) is being implemented by a
special purpose vehicle - Hyderabad International Airport Ltd - in which GMR
Infrastructure has a 63 per cent equity stake. Other shareholders are Malaysia
Airport Holdings Berhad (11 per cent), Andhra Pradesh government (13 per cent)
and Airports Authority of India (13 per cent.)
