Hindalco Industries on 8 April 2005 signed an MoU
with the Government of Orissa to set up a world-class aluminium complex in
Orissa.
The integrated aluminium project costing
Rs.11,000 crore will include bauxite mining facility of 3 million tpa, an
alumina refinery of 10 lakh tpa and an aluminium smelter of capacity, 2.6 lakh
tpa. Power will be sourced through a captive plant of 650 MW. The project would
be spread over the the Sambalpur and Koraput districts of the state.
The MoU was signed between Hindalco Managing
Director, Mr Debu Bhattacharya, and the State Industries Secretary, Mr G.C. Pati,
in the presence of the Mr Kumaramangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group,
and the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik.
The development comes very close to AV Birla
Group's announcement of setting up a mega aluminium complex in Jharkhand.
The early announcement of the Orissa project came
in October 2004. It may be mentioned that the AV Birla group is already in the
midst of constructing an aluminium complex in Orissa, but the project is being
stymied by local opposition.
