Mahangar Telephone Nigam is investing Rs.1,312
crore during the current fiscal year to upgrade and expand its network in Delhi
and the NCR region.
MTNL has targeted to add 5.5 lakh new
connections, including 4 lakh GSM and 1.5 lakh CDMA, in Delhi for which an
investment of Rs.610 crore will be made in 2005-06. The remaining investment
will be made towards network upgradation and introduction of new services.
Currently, the CDMA-based service has a capacity
of 1.5 lakh while the GSM-based capacity is 6.25 lakh, in Delhi. Against this,
the subscriber base is 1.17 lakh and 5.47 lakh, respectively.
MTNL offers the GSM-based cellular service under
the brand name Dolphin (post-paid) and Trump (pre-paid). The WLL-(M) service
based on CDMA technology operates under the brand name, Garuda.
