The West Bengal government has offered
land to Tata Motors for its proposed greenfield plant to manufacture commercial
vehicles.
According to reports, some land near
Kharagpur in West Bengal has been offered but Tata Motors has not made any
formal commitment to set up its plant there. Kharagpur lies near the West
Bengal-Jharkhand border and is very close to Tata Steel's Jamshedpur steel
complex.
Tata Motors has planned to set up a
greenfield manufacturing facility for its popular Ace commercial vehicle (mini
truck) that was launched in May 2005. The company has also initiated steps to
double production capacity of Ace to 60,000 units per year at the Pune plant.
In an independent development, Tata
Motors in January 2006 had indicated that it was considering setting up a
greenfield unit for manufacturing heavy commercial vehicles (trucks) in West
Bengal. Meanwhile, Tata Motors is also working on its "small car"
project that is currently in the testing stage. The company might go in for yet
another location for this project.
