SEPCO Electric Power Construction Corp
has won the contract to set up a $639 million (Rs.2,800 crore) power plant for
Vedanta Alumina.
According to the contract signed in
early March 2006, Sepco will build a coal-based power plant having five units of
135 MW each, in the first phase.
The plant, located in Jharsuguda
district of Orissa, will meet the energy requirements of Vedanta Alumina's
upcoming 5 lakh tpa greenfield aluminium smelter in the state. Construction work
on the smelter, to be implemented in two phases of 2.5 lakh tpa, will begin in
June 2006.
According to Vedanta's original plans,
a power plant of capacity 1,215 MW (135 MW x 9) has been envisaged. The current
order pertains to Phase I of the overall project.
(Note: SEPCO Electric Power
Construction Corp is based in east China's Shandong Province. The power plant to
be developed is reportedly the largest built by any Chinese company in India.)
