Tuticorin Port Trust has outlined an
overall capacity expansion project costing Rs.4,000 crore.
In Phase I, which would be completed
by end-2008, the port would spend Rs.835 crore in increasing draft from the
existing 10.7m to 12.5m. This phase would also include setting up a second
container terminal costing Rs.150 crore.
These projects, forming part of the
National Maritime Development Programme, would be part-financed through a
budgetary support of Rs.225 crore the Union government.
Preliminary work for Phase II, costing
Rs.3,300 crore, has begun. This phase entails deepening of draft to 14.5m,
construction of breakwaters, extending the approach channel, etc. Phase II
is scheduled for completion by 2012.
Second container terminal: It is
learnt that four out of the six bidders for the second container terminal
project have been shortlisted, and forward to the shipping ministry for further
clearance. The four bidders include Chettinad Logistics, Larsen & Toubro and
PSA-Sical.
