Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust has
invited expressions of interest from prospective developers for the proposed
container terminal and marine chemical terminal at the port. The proposed
container terminal, the port's fourth, would be developed either as a joint
venture, BOT basis or in the PPP mode.
JNPT has proposed to develop the new
container terminal by converting its existing liquid terminal. Accordingly, a
marine chemical terminal would also be developed as a compensatory move.

JNPT currently has two operating
container terminals that handled a combined traffic of 2.47 million TEUs in
2005-06, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of India's total container traffic.
The port is in the process of developing its third terminal for which a
concession agreement has been entered with Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd -- a
74:26 joint venture between Maersk Sealands and Container Corporation of India.
There are even plans of constructing a fifth container terminal.
