The design consultant for Kochi Port
Trust's Vallarpadam International Container Terminal project is likely to be
appointed by end-May 2006, it is learnt.
According to information received,
soil excavation and test piling work have been completed. The appointment of the
design consultant will expedite the tendering process for the main construction
contract. Construction work at the terminal is likely to start by December 2006.
The project site is likely to be
notified as a special economic zone, for which approval is being sought.
Meanwhile, rail and road connectivity are progressing as per schedule. As of
mid-May 2006, the alignment and financing were attained.
The Vallarpadam ICTT, being developed
by India Gateway Terminal (an SPV promoted by Dubai Ports International), is
scheduled for commissioning by December 2008.
