Motorola bagged the 2 million GSM line
expansion contract from Mahanagar Telephone Nigam of Delhi. The financial bids
were opened on 6 July 2006 and Motorola emerged as the lowest bidder quoting
Rs.570 crore.
Out of the 2 million lines, around
0.75 million lines will be for 3G network. The two other bidders in the
fray included Siemens and Ericsson.
MTNL is soon expected to issue the
letter of intent in a few days and the order will be placed within 30 days from
the issue of LoI. Work on the project is scheduled for completion by early-2007.
For Mumbai, the award for the similar
two million line expansion has been reserved for the state owned ITI Ltd and the
PSU quota.
