The Maharashtra government is awaiting
approval from the Union civil aviation ministry for a proposed airport at Kalyan,
55 km from Mumbai. The airport is aimed at decongesting the existing Mumbai
international airport.
Land measuring 1,700 acres exists near
Kalyan, it is learnt. This land will have to be acquired from the defence
ministry, the existing land owners.
The development of this airport will
complement two ongoing efforts at improve passenger handling capacity in Mumbai
and satellite areas -- modernisation of the existing Sahar international airport
that is being done through a consortium led by GVK Industries and development of
a greenfield airport at Navi Mumbai. The revamped Sahar international airport is
being developed to handle 40 million passengers per year by 2008.
