Karnataka government on 18 September
2008, offered 1,000 acre and incentives to Tata Motors to relocate its main Nano
plant from Singur in West Bengal, where work has been suspended since early
September 2008 on account of a protest led by the Trinamool Congress supporting
unwilling land-losers to the project.
Karnataka proposes to give the land in
Dharwad district where the Tata Group already has equipment manufacturing
facility spread over 600 acre.
The West Bengal government has offered
to give back around 70 acre which Trinamool Congress leader Mamta Bannerjee is
not willing to accept. Tata Motors is also against giving back such large tracts
of land as the Nano is an integrated project and needs ancillaries to function
within the complex.
