The Orissa Government is likely to appoint a consultant of international
repute to help it select a developer for the greenfield port at Barunei Muhan in
Kendarapara district.
The state has suggested that the Industrial Infrastructure Development
Corporation may be asked to appoint the consultant and pay for it. The
consultancy fee is proposed to be recovered from the developer later.
Meanwhile, ArcelorMittal, Adhunik Metaliks, SPI Ports and the Chennai based
Sical Logistics have shown interest in setting up of a port at Barunei Muhan.
Arcelor-Mittal has proposed to set up a captive port at Barunei Muhan to the
north of Mahanadi river near Paradip. It will have a cargo handling capacity of
35 million tpa to be attained in two phases.
Similarly, Adhunik Metaliks plans to set up an all weather commercial port at
Barunei Muhan. The project is likely to come up in phases and the total
investment in Phase I is pegged at Rs 1,684 crore. It will have a cargo handling
capacity of 30 million tpa when fully commissioned.
SPI Ports proposes to develop a minor port in the same location with an
investment of Rs 1,550 crore. It is expected to have three berths and container
traffic facility in the first phase and the number of berths will go up to 12 in
later phase.
Besides, Sical Logistics has proposed to set up a deep water all weather
commercial port at Barunei Muhan. The project envisages an investment of Rs
3,600 crore in phases and is to have a cargo handling capacity of 46 million tpa
when fully commissioned.
