Rajasthan Aviation Infrastructure (RAIPL) plans to develop a multi-modal
aerotropolis in Viratnagar in Jaipur district of Rajasthan. In February 2010,
the Union Government has given in principle approval to RAIPL for setting up a
new greenfield airport.
All the necessary clearances in regards to the project are in place. However,
construction of the airport is likely to commence on completion of necessary
formalities with the state government.
At Viratnagar, the Phase I of the Rs 4,000-crore project, which is part of
the early bird projects under Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, is expected to
be ready by 2014. The 3,000-acre aerotropolis area, which currently is a
completely barren location, is to be developed into a global trans-shipment hub.
RAIPL is likely to develop the facility in association with Germany's Frankfurt
Airport, AG.
The aerotropolis is likely to be connected to the international airport, NH-8
(Delhi-Jaipur), railway line and sea-port through dedicated freight corridor.
The airport will have two runways and could handle the most commonly used
freighter aircraft.
