The Union Government on 9 April 2010 gave in principle approval to Cochin
International Airport's (CIAL) proposed airport-based industrial park.
The government has granted SEZ status for 250 acre of CIAL's property
covering the industrial park project site, a major area of the maintenance
hanger, science park and the airport museum.
While the area proposed for the Phase I is close to the apron and the MRO
(maintenance, repair and overhaul) unit, the area earmarked for the Phase II of
development is the property adjacent to the cargo complex. It also sets aside
half an acre to set up a science park and two acre for constructing the proposed
airport museum just outside the project site.
In November 2006, CIAL filed an application for granting SEZ status to its
property and renewed the application later with a sector specific proposal.
CIAL has already floated a proposal inviting aerospace companies and
entrepreneurs to set up industrial units in the project site with an
airport-based SEZ status.
