The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) on 23 April 2010 gave its nod
for the development of North Cargo Berth-II for handling bulk cargoes at the
Tuticorin port in Tamil Nadu.
The project is to be implemented on DBFOT basis for the period of 30 years at
an estimated cost of Rs 332.16 crore. The project is expected to be completed
within twenty-four months from the date of award of concession.
On completion, the Tuticorin port will be able to handle 7 million tpa of
bulk cargoes with higher productivity rate per day. The project is likely to
boost the import trade in the region with a saving in freight and ship cost to
the shippers. The mechanised facility is expected to reduce the dwell time of
bulk cargoes.
