Nearly 99,000 households in Tamil Nadu have received piped natural gas (PNG) connections, as per a recent statement made in Parliament by Suresh Gopi, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Responding to questions from DMK MPs CN Annadurai and G Selvam, the minister revealed that pipeline infrastructure has been completed along 45 percent of the planned 37,374 km national network aimed at serving domestic PNG consumers by 2032. This target is part of the Minimum Work Programme (MWP) set by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), which aims to provide 2.32 crore PNG connections across the country.
Tamil Nadu has been divided into 18 geographical areas for implementing the city gas distribution (CGD) network. Authorised entities involved in the pipeline work include BPCL, IOCL, Megha City Gas, IRM Energy, Adani Total Gas, Torrent Gas, and Think Gas (formerly AG&P), with permissions granted between 2018 and 2022. As of May, Coimbatore leads with 38,362 PNG connections, followed by Nilgiris (18,882) and Salem (4,593). Major pipeline completions include 3,063 km in Coimbatore, 2,433 km in Chennai-Tiruvallur, and 2,011 km in Kancheepuram. PNGRB continues to monitor and enforce progress.
