Airports Authority of India is
planning to borrow Rs.2,000 crore to fund the modernisation of Kolkata and
Chennai airports.
The debt will be mopped up from the
domestic market or channelled through the external commercial borrowing (ECB)
route. Modernisation of the two airports is estimated to cost Rs.5,700 crore.
Earlier the government had planned to
develop both the airports on public-private partnership on the lines of Delhi
and Mumbai. However, the government has then decided that upgradation of both
airports will be done by AAI. The modernisation project for the two airports is
expected to be completed by 2013-14.
