The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 190 million (approx. Rs 1,580 crore) financial assistance to support the Indore Metro Rail Project in Madhya Pradesh.
The project includes constructing an 8.62- km underground Metro line with seven stations, connecting congested parts of Indore to the airport. Aimed at improving urban mobility, the Metro will feature modern infrastructure with accessibility for the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities. ADB India Country Director Mio Oka emphasised the project's role in reducing pollution and supporting vulnerable groups through employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
The Metro is projected to cut annual carbon emissions by 12,414 tonne. It will also feature multimodal integration with bus and feeder services and offer commercial space to women-led self-help groups. Safety audits and ridership data will inform future improvements. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) will implement the project, with operations slated to start by January 2030.
