Adani Power has signed a pact with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop the 570 MW Wangchhu hydropower project with an investment of about Rs 6,000 crore.
The project, structured on a build, own, operate, transfer (BOOT) model, marks a significant milestone in India-Bhutan energy cooperation. Agreements, including the power purchase and concession arrangements, were formalised in the presence of Bhutan Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. The detailed project report has been completed, and construction is set to commence in the first half of 2026, with commissioning targeted within five years.
The Wangchhu project will play a crucial role in meeting Bhutan’s peak winter power demand, while surplus summer generation will be exported to India, strengthening cross-border energy ties. This venture is the first under the May 2025 MoU between Adani Group and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan, underscoring the companies’ long-term strategic partnership.
