The nine-year old Alappuzha drinking water project has not been completed even after Kerala high court directed the municipality authorities to complete it before December, 2013.
By November, the tenure of Alappuzha municipality's administration will end. Around 70 to 80 per cent works of the project have been completed. The pipe-laying works in Edathua has not been finished by the Kerala water authority (KWA).
The estimated cost of this project is Rs 188 crore and is being implemented with central assistance under the urban infrastructure development scheme for small and medium towns. In 2007, the Centre had allotted Rs 112 crore to the municipality for executing this project and has directed it to completed the work before 2010.
Till now, Rs 165 crore has been spend and require Rs 60 crore for completing it. Apart from this, KWA requires the permission of Railways for laying pipelines in their land. In this regard, a meeting will be held on 13 May and final decision about the project completion deadline will be taken.
As many as 2.15 lakh people in municipal area and over 3.16 lakh people in the eight panchayats are expected to benefit under this drinking water project at a daily supply rate of 135 ltr per person.
