French mobility leader Alstom has secured a significant contract from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to deliver 39 fully driverless Metropolis trainsets, advanced Urbalis Forward CBTC signalling, and five years of FlexCare Perform maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4.
Valued at several hundred million euros, the order covers 234 metro cars. The 35.3-km elevated 'Green Line' stretching from Wadala to Kasarvadavali in Thane with 32 stations, is expected to ease congestion on the Eastern Express Highway, cut travel time, and reduce carbon emissions. In alignment with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, all 39 trainsets will be designed and manufactured domestically. Engineering will take place at Alstom’s Bengaluru facility, assembly at Sri City, propulsion at Coimbatore, and bogies at Savli, Gujarat.
The trains will feature driverless operation, interior airflow cooling, electrical braking, cybersecurity measures, wheelchair access, and bike racks. Alstom’s Urbalis Vision platform will be deployed at the Mandale depot’s Operation Control Centre and a backup in Mogharpada. Alstom already supports several other Mumbai Metro lines and has installed CBTC systems across 190+ metro lines globally.
