The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a large-scale initiative to tackle legacy waste and improve wastewater management.
By 02 October, 2025, 85.90 lakh tonne of legacy waste will be cleared, with another 30 lakh tonne targeted for removal by December. Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar stated that recovered land will be reused productively, with compost and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) sent to cement plants. Waste-to-energy projects are already functional in Visakhapatnam and Guntur, while new plants are planned in Nellore, Rajahmundry, Kurnool, Kadapa, Vijayawada, and Tirupati—six of which are expected to be operational by 2027.
On the wastewater front, land acquisition is underway for 142 sewage treatment plants (STPs), needing 199 acres, to ensure sustainable water reuse. The state aims to adopt a circular economy model to maximize environmental and resource efficiency while generating employment.
