Goa has inaugurated its first common hazardous waste treatment storage and disposal facility in Pissurlem, Sattari taluka, marking a significant initiative by the Pramod Sawant government.
This Rs 125 crore project, managed by Ponda Envocare (PEL), aims to address the state’s hazardous waste management needs, as Goa generates nearly 45,000 metric tonnes of hazardous waste annually. This facility includes provisions for landfillable, incinerable, and recyclable waste, with the capacity to process 25,000 tonne each of landfillable and co-processed waste, alongside 14,000 tonne of incinerable waste per year.
Equipped with a rotary kiln incinerator, the plant operates at high temperatures to ensure safe waste disposal, while continuously monitoring emissions to prevent environmental contamination. The establishment of this facility is a crucial step in safeguarding Goa’s environment from the dangers posed by hazardous waste.
