Andhra Pradesh has charted a path to become a national leader in green hydrogen production, announcing its Green Hydrogen Valley roadmap.
The state aims to produce 1.5 million tonne (MT) of green hydrogen annually by 2029 and establish two GW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity by 2027. At the inaugural meeting of the Green Hydrogen Valley Advisory Board, Chief Secretary K Vijayanand and NITI Aayog Member VK Saraswat outlined the state's advantages, including its biomass resources, abundant renewable energy potential, and 974-km coastline, pointed to the successful commissioning of the one GW pumped storage plant in Kurnool.
The initiative seeks to integrate green hydrogen into local industries such as steel, fertilizers, and ports, while also boosting farmer incomes and creating employment. The Central government is set to provide incentives through the National Hydrogen Mission to industries adopting green hydrogen technologies. NTPC Green Energy's (NGEL) plant aims to produce 1,500 tonne of green hydrogen daily using 20 GW of renewable energy, with an investment of Rs 1.85 lakh crore. This initiative is expected to reduce foreign energy imports and promote domestic energy use.
Additionally, AP GreenCo Co-AGM Ram Kumar highlighted that converting the NPCL fertiliser plant in Kakinada into a one-million-tonne ammonia facility will further enhance the region’s green hydrogen ecosystem. Several MoUs related to green hydrogen production are expected to be signed at the upcoming CII conference in Visakhapatnam on November 14–15.
