The Assam government has secured a major boost for its citizens with the allotment of prime land in Mumbai’s Colaba for public infrastructure development.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced that the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) has allotted four bighas, approx.2.5 acres, to Assam on a 60-year lease. The allocation follows a request from the Assam Chief Secretary to the Union Ministry, seeking land to create a dedicated centre serving long-term needs of the people. Minister Sonowal emphasized that this is a "people-first initiative," designed to provide direct benefits to Assamese citizens.
The upcoming project aims to cater to healthcare, educational, welfare, and social service needs, while also functioning as an incubation hub for entrepreneurs. The strategic location in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, is expected to give Assamese students, patients, and businesses greater access to opportunities in the city. Officials highlighted that sustainable development plans are under review, ensuring public utility and long-term benefits.
