Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed Naik Environment Research Institute (NERIL) as the consultant for the Gargai project.
The company will prepare reports of tree cutting and alternative plantation and make estimates for the project. It will also obtain permissions from the National Board of Wildlife (NBWL) and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for the proposed project.
BMC will pay Rs 1.96 crore for consultation services from NERIL. The Gargai dam project will affect around 720 ha of forest land.
Once completed, the project will supply 440 million ltr of water daily to Mumbai city.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 2,725 crore and will come up at Ogade village in Wada taluka. The project also includes constructing a dam, water tower, and 2.5 km tunnel between Gargai and Modaksagar lakes.
