The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has significantly scaled down its plans for a multi-modal transport hub at Hebbal, reducing its land request from 45 acres to just nine acres.
The BMRCL has now submitted a revised proposal to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), scrapping the original depot project and drastically altering the hub’s design. The original plan included a mega hub with a depot, parking facilities, and connectivity across the airport, Blue, Orange, and Red metro lines. It was considered crucial to easing traffic congestion in North Bengaluru. MPs Tejasvi Surya and PC Mohan, and MLA S Suresh Kumar had publicly urged the government to allocate the full 45-acre plot.
A high-level meeting led by Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on 05 May directed officials to revise the hub’s design. Concerns have emerged over a competing claim by BBMP, which seeks part of the land for a 16.6 km tunnel road project between Hebbal and Silk Board.
