Pune’s Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line witnessed its maiden trial run on 27 August, as a key milestone in the city’s urban transport journey.
The test, conducted between Maan Depot and Balewadi Stadium (Station No. 10), marked the first entry of a train into the 23 km corridor’s main alignment. Engineers and project officials monitored track performance, signalling systems, and operational safety, ensuring readiness for upcoming phased tests. Once operational, the corridor is expected to be a "game changer" for traffic-choked Pune, linking Hinjewadi’s IT hubs with Shivajinagar’s central business district.
Passing through residential and educational zones, it promises a faster and greener commute for professionals, students, and daily travellers. The Pune Metro Line III project is being developed under the public–private partnership (PPP) model by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
The contract was awarded to TRIL Urban Transport (Tata Group) and Siemens Project Ventures via a special purpose vehicle, Pune IT City Metro Rail (PITCMRL). Executed on a DBFOT model, the project has a 35-year concession period including construction.
